The design of lighting solutions for prison settings requires special attention irrespective of their location (cells, corridors, communal areas, etc.).

As prisoners are not watched continuously when they are in their cells, the lighting appliances fitted in these must be able to resist attempts at vandalism (e.g. being pulled out), opening (except for routine servicing), all repeated manipulations and unintended events (e.g. corrosion).

Despite these security precautions, the lighting fitments must still offer comfortable high-quality lighting in order to ensure decent conditions of custody.
